Question for those with dogs in apartments (or uses pee pads)

Hey all! We are all moved in to the new place! (by moved in I mean all my stuff is here but not really fully packed) And I need some advice!!! I got Wilson peepads to use since we no longer have a yard and I set up two areas for him. One on the balcony and one in our storage room off the balcony (has no door). Ive spritted it down with some puppy trainer that supposed to make it smell like pee.

What else should I be doing?!?! Its the first day here so I can understand that he will be stressed and I'll be patient with him since he does have to kinda re-learn this and all that but I need help! He seems pretty stuck on going to the bathroom on grass but I know I can teach my old dog new tricks, I just need some tips and suggestions!!!

Every time he goes to the door to ask to go out like he did back home I lead him to one of these area's (mostly the storage room as thats where I would prefer him to go) but so far no peeing.

Thanks in advance, I figured I'd use the blog to get some help =p

I wouldn't use pee pads as once you do encourage him to go on them he may forget the rest of his potty training which would be bad. Try a product like this http://www.petco.com/product/110970/Potty-Patch-To-As-Seen-on-TV.aspx . Expensive I know but probably worth it. It will click that light bulb (Oh grass, I pee here). I'd still keep it outside on the balcony, that way you maintain that 'dogs potty outside' state of mind while still not having to travel down twenty flights of steps six times a day. A potty trained dachshund is a terrible thing to waste.

We had three Dachshunds and the indoor potty thingies get really, really stinky. Pee pads are kind of "yuck" too, but at least you can throw them out. I think it's your preference. The most ideal situation would be to take him out on leash and relieve him that way. I know, more work for you, but as was said above, he may lose all of his "outside" pottying instincts. Maybe not so much lose them, but become unpredictable. Dachshunds are difficult to house train as it is so you might want to stick with going outside.

I usually have the opposite problem (teaching a pee pad trained dog to go outside) so I have no suggestions. Good luck!

I live in an apartment & use the pee pee pads as well. We still go outside, but Jasper still uses the pads every once in a while. They are also great for me because he will not go potty if it is raining, he is not that kind of dog:) But if I were you, I would stick to just having the pad outside on your balcony. That way when he scratches at the door you can still lead him "outside" to go potty. (Again, not wanting to loose the training you've done.)

Good luck!!

best of luck! I had no idea dachshunds would be so hard to potty train! Our labs learned so quickly and the doxies just tend to do what they want where they want.

If you'll be using a pee pad, your pet might forget his potty training. Besides, pee pad is kinda disgusting, good thing about this is that at least you can throw them out. You might try to keep a regular schedule wherein you would take your pet out, in that way, you will help him an outdoor training, so that pee pad will be out of the list.
